Match Report:

Ely City had home advantage against a strong team from High Elms, Kent.

Matchplay Golf is a brilliant showcase of Club Amateurs playing under extreme pressures in order to secure a place at the Grand Finals in November. This tie was no different and nerves were clearly an issue when Ely starter Roger Day announced the players onto the tee.

In the first match, after a shaky start the big hitting Ed Webster from Ely City won holes 2, 3 and 4 and never looked back finishing with a 6 and 4 win.

It was High Elms that struck first in the 2nd game when Glen Vaughan chipped in on the first and holed a 15 footer on the second to go 2 up. Ely’s Simon Cooper fought back through the turn and after a close game that could have gone either way it went to Ely winning 3 and 2.

The 3rd and 4th matches were close all the way round, never more than a shot or two in it. Some great golf in match 3 with Clive Harrison making birdie on the tough 8th hole only to be cut back by a brilliant approach shot from High Elms Andy Ferguson on the 10th. High Elms eventually running out with a 3 and 2 win.

The 4th match ended with a 1up victory to a very resilient Simon Farquhar from High Elms. Ely’s Kevin Peacock nicknamed the ‘sniper’ couldn’t outgun his opponent this time losing for the first time in this year’s Annodata UK Golf Club Classic.

With the scores tied at 2-2 it was left with the High Elms Captain, Colin Tait to battle it out with Ely’s Neil Brosnan. With a large gathering following the match over the closing holes it was Ely that triumphed on the 17th. That was match play as its finest! Ely progress to the Finals in Spain.

With the pressure on, all the golfers can be proud of themselves for taking part in such a close match.

Ely Team Captain, Mark Smith would like to pass on his thanks firstly to High Elms who played the match in great spirit, and had the disadvantage of the away draw.

Thanks to Matchplay Golf who turned up to support the match and provide live tweets to @Match_PlayGolf . The Ely supporters, caddies and starter and finally the players from Ely.

Well done to both teams for a great match played in the spirit of the game.

See you in Spain.
